Mother Nature was a little confused and dialed up Polar Plunge weather just in time for Special Olympics Indiana Area 8 Spring Games at Ben Davis High School on Saturday, May 14th. The temperature barely reached 50 degrees; but, that didn’t stop Marion County Southside Storm athletes from braving the cold and bringing home the gold in an impressive display of athleticism in numerous events. This was the first year athletes were presented with medals for first (gold), second (silver), and third (bronze) places during Special Olympics Indiana Area Spring Games competition.
The crowd was sparse as athletes and spectators flocked to their warm cars between events and ventured out just long enough for their next scheduled event. The die-hard fans who stayed outside and braved the elements huddled in winter coats and blankets. After the first round of athletes competed in the javelin throw, the sloppy, wet grassy area quickly turned into mud and became potentially hazardous for athletes. The remainder of the competitions which were scheduled in the grassy area (javelin throw and softball throw) were withdrawn from competition due to the muddy field conditions.
